AGP Uncovers Rs29.8M Scholarship Fund Scam in Sindh Education Department
The Auditor General of Pakistan has exposed massive irregularities in the Sindh Education Department’s scholarship funds, revealing that a cheque for Rs29.8 million was issued by the Endowment Fund College Education to a fake NGO, Asri Islamic Foundation. The NGO was registered under the name of Laila Ali, wife of former section officer Gulzar Ahmed Memon.
The funds were deposited in Dubai Islamic Bank’s Sukkur branch, where Rs3.7 million was withdrawn before the FIA froze the account, leaving Rs26.2 million. The scam, pending since October 2021, has seen no significant action despite clear recommendations for accountability. The Sindh Assembly has now referred the case to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for further investigation and recovery proceedings.
