Poliovirus Detected in Multiple Regions of Pakistan

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has confirmed the detection of poliovirus in several parts of Pakistan during July 2025. Out of 125 environmental samples collected from 87 districts, the virus was found in:
Balochistan: 1 case
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 7 cases
Punjab: 12 districts
Islamabad: 3 cases
No cases were reported in Azad Jammu and Kashmir or Gilgit-Baltistan.
Polio, a highly infectious disease that primarily affects children, has no cure but is preventable through vaccination. While Pakistan has made significant progress, it remains one of only two countries where polio is still endemic.
