Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued an urgent warning to 39 federal ministries and key departments over a looming BlueLocker ransomware threat that could cripple government systems and compromise sensitive state data. The advisory, sent to top officials including the Secretaries of Cabinet Division, Interior, and Foreign Affairs, as well as heads of NACTA, FIA, and PEMRA, cautions that if the malware spreads unchecked, it could cause permanent data loss, operational shutdowns, and severe national security risks. BlueLocker targets Windows-based systems from desktops and servers to networks and cloud storage encrypting files and demanding ransom for recovery. CERT has advised immediate isolation of infected devices, internal dissemination of the warning, and prompt incident reporting to contain the threat. Officials warn that a successful attack could disrupt business continuity systems and expose highly sensitive government information, underscoring the growing cybersecurity vulnerabilities facing Pakistan amid a global surge in ransomware incidents.
