Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will formally recognize a Palestinian state at next month’s UN General Assembly, joining the UK, France, and Canada in a coordinated move aimed at advancing a two-state solution. The decision comes amid mounting global condemnation of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has left the US increasingly isolated among its closest allies. Australia says it has received commitments from the Palestinian Authority on demilitarization, elections, governance reforms, and the exclusion of Hamas from any future government. New Zealand is also considering recognition, which would see four of the Five Eyes nations support Palestinian statehood.
